![]() ![]() Bottom line, this game is a must-have for children. ![]() The concept is groundbreaking and the graphics and sound are great. In a year that features your typical “safe” fall releases, Skylanders dares to be different and tackles innovation head-on. With 37 different characters, 30 levels worth of gameplay and multiple challenges and unlockables within each stage, Skylanders is and incredibly enjoyable, unique and deep experience for kids of all ages.įinal Verdict: I love what Activision has done with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. However, Skylanders is not trying to be Elder Scrolls. Some will be turned off by the vibe this game gives off, seeing as it is aimed at a younger audience and the level of difficulty is relatively low. The game also features comedic dialogue between characters, mostly aimed at kids, but with a few subtle lines that older gamers can appreciate as well (especially the interactions between Flynn, voiced by Patrick Warburton (Joe Swanson on Family Guy) and Cali). Like many of the characters, each world feels and looks fresh and different. Between the leveling up, collecting loot and unlocking various hats and soul gems that provide statistical boosts and move upgrades, the game has something that even more serious gamers can enjoy.Īs far as graphics and audio go, Skylanders features vibrant and colorful environments as well as well-executed and often entertaining voice acting. On the surface, yes, Skylanders is a game that is aimed at children, but even as an adult (this is debatable) I enjoyed myself as I tinkered with the game’s deeper RPG elements. Spyro is the main character in title alone and kids will quickly be able to develop a rapport with their favorite champion. While you may be using Spyro’s fiery headbutt dash to break through wooden fences, you can also use Gill Grunt’s bubble cannon to accomplish the same feat. The game encourages switching between characters because while each world features it’s own specific elemental power bonus, there are a handful of unlockable areas and rewards gamers get from using different “Champions.”Įach of the “Champions” themselves have a unique angle and power, you never really feel as if you are controlling the same character at any point in the game. Switching between characters is seamless, and adds a component to the gameplay that is missing from your standard platforming adventure. While the story is pretty cut and dry, the concept behind Skylanders is one of the freshest, most innovative experiments in gaming, and it works very well. After Kaos returns and wreaks havoc on Skylands, sending each of the game’s 37 champions away from the mythical world and shrinking them down to the size of toys, it’s up to the “portal master” to rescue them and use their powers to defeat Kaos and restore order to Skylands. Skylanders lets the player become the “portal master” and allows you to solve puzzles and beat up baddies using the game’s various characters, including Spyro himself. The story behind Skylanders is fairly straightforward and generic for a platformer. Each of the toys, or “Champions” as they are referred to in the game, has its own internal memory device that saves all of your in-game accomplishments (loot, experience, weapons, etc.) and can be used on any platform’s portal, whether it be Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii. ![]() Skylanders is the first-ever cross-platform title and comes packaged with three toys and a portal as part of the game’s starter kit. ![]()
